My art is inspired by the ever changing and evolving forms in nature and the seasons. Animals and the development of plant forms are a constant inspiration for me to create pure forms. Working wood with traditional hand tools and techniques is a very rewarding experience. Each piece of wood is different and carving is an inspiring conversation with a unique piece of living material.

    Description goes here

Wood is a living material, full of history, colour, smell and ever changing grain-pattern. Each piece is unique and for me carving is a conversation between the wood and my inspiration. Sometimes I am receiving and responding. At other times I am directing and guiding the process. I use direct carving technique supported by drawings and clay-modelling. The tactile-ness of woodcarving is very important to me and I love touching the wood and the forms. For me the sense of touch has become like another pair of eyes adding to the experience of form, texture and the qualities of materials.

Most of my wood is local, grown in Devon. Some is from my garden, some is found and other pieces are given to me by friends. Occasionally I buy wood from small local sawmills. Cherry, Sweet Chestnut and Lime are my favourite carving woods and fortunately they all grow locally. For carving I use green and seasoned wood depending on my aim and interest.
