Designing and carving a picture-relief is the ideal project for beginners and experienced carvers for a days work. By creating your own design, you can make it easy or complex depending on experience and taste.
I am available for advice and help in developing the design. During the carving process your design can change and develop further. I will demonstrate and explain the correct and safe use of tools throughout the day.
You will use sharp traditional woodcarving tools and Devon-grown lime for carving. Lime is close-grained and soft with a very warm and welcoming feel and is the ideal wood for the project.
At the end of the day you will take home your own personally designed wood carving and will have experienced the process of creating a wood carving with traditional woodcarving tools.
The workshop takes place in my woodcarving studio in South Devon which is set-up for teaching young people and adults.
The minimum age is 12; any young person from that age up to 18 has to be accompanied by an participating and paying adult.

Woodcarving weekend with experienced teacher, all levels of experience welcome

This two-day course provides the opportunity for a more in-depth experience of woodcarving and the completion of a bigger project of your choice.
You can design and carve either a picture relief or a three dimensional form. Throughout the two days I will advise on design, demonstrate tools and techniques and be at hand whenever needed. With a small group size I can give as much individual help and support as is appropriate for each participant.
This two day course is suitable for complete beginners with or without woodworking or artistic experience. Experienced artists and carvers will enjoy the opportunity to deepen and develop their skills. I can advise and help with the design process and will support the practical and creative process throughout.

Please don't hesitate to ask during the course for advice on tool sharpening, carving tools and suitable wood for carving. I am always very happy to share my experience on woodcarving.

Whittling for beginners with experienced teacher

This course is a good introduction to whittling for adults and children from the age of 9. Please note, all under 18 year olds have to be accompanied by a participating and paying adult. Forest school teachers and guide group leaders can use the course as CPD to learn new creative whittling projects to make with children.
There is something deeply about satisfying whittling a piece of wood with a sharp knife. On the day you will learn how to use a knife safely to make a collection of small whittling projects.

My wood carving studio in Buckfastleigh TQ11 0DB is is set up for teaching small groups of children and adults. With a maximum group size of 4, I can give individual help and support.
I can help and advise you on designing your carving and show how to use the woodcarving tools. and on tools sharpening.

Limited to 3 participants, this 1 day course takes place in my woodcarving studio in Buckfastleigh, South Devon which is set-up for teaching children and adults.
The focus of this practical one day course for home educators, parents, grandparents and teachers, is on how to teach children whittling and basic woodwork skills in a creative and safe way. My background is in sculpture and creative education and I enjoy showing and encouraging educators how working with wood can become a tool to discover the world of sculpture. Experience shows that practical, hands-on skill-building activities support children's development and self confidence.
The core of this workshop is the artistic whittling of various projects (see photos) all suitable for beginners, adults and children. I will show and explain how to use and sharpen the tools. In a further stage I show how you can teach and demonstrate your skills to the children. By the end of the workshop you will have made a number of projects that you will take home, together with the skills and knowledge for you to make these with children.
My teaching experience is based on over 22 years of teaching whittling, woodcarving and other three dimensional arts and crafts to adults and children. I love sharing my experience and enthusing others in working with wood.
